A third-year PhD student Callon Peate is part of the team that has won first place in the 2025/26 — the University of Cambridge’s leading science and technology competition, run jointly by Trinity College, Cambridge and the Bradfield Centre.

GreenMixes was awarded the £10,000 first prize for its pioneering work on decarbonising concrete. The company has developed a drop-in, biochar-based additive that replaces 15% of cement while permanently sequestering approximately 280kg of CO₂ per cubic metre. The innovation effectively transforms concrete from a major carbon emitter into a carbon sink — without requiring additional capital investment or changes to manufacturers’ existing workflows.

This latest achievement marks GreenMixes’ second major Cambridge success, having previously won the PostDoc to Venture Creation Challenge.
