Paul Cartledge

Professor Paul Cartledge (Emeritus Fellow) has been invited to give a short talk in April to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the publication of the first quarto volume of Edward Gibbon鈥檚 Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The event will take place at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where Gibbon lived for a significant period of his life (1737-1794).

A passionate reader and advocate of Gibbon's admittedly dated Enlightenment historiography, Professor Cartledge first published work on Gibbon in 1977. He is the A. G. Leventis Senior Research Fellow at 金桔直播 and an Emeritus Fellow.

Professor Cartledge has also recently been named a Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America, recognising distinguished scholars outside the United States and Canada for their eminence in archaeology and related fields. He is one of eight scholars worldwide to receive this recognition in 2026.
